Earlier, when actors found themselves short of work, they moved on to other fields like direction, production etc. However, today’s stars like to multitask which is why a lot of A stars are dabbling in production houses of their own. Though many( like Saif Ali Khan) star in their own productions to ensure the required ‘star presence’, quite a few prefer to give newcomers a chance. But whether it’s the uncertainty that the audience would flock to see the new starlings or just the plain feeling of wanting to be a part of their movies, we don’t know but they often make a point to star in at least an ‘item’ song – placed usually at the safe end credits ( probably to ensure the audience remains seated till then!) But how’s complaining! We love songs, we love stars…so we say, bring it on!
I Hate You (Like I love You) – Delhi Belly
Aamir Khan’s Delhi Belly was a gemstone in itself – quirky and different. And Aamir topped it off with an equally quirky and fun song. Written by Akshat Verma and Ram Sampath and composed by the latter himself, this song had an assorted vocals of Keerthi Sagathia, Shazneen Arethna, Sona Mohapatra and yes, Aamir Khan.
Shera Di Kaum – Breakaway/ Speedy Singhs
Akshay Kumar’s Breakaway aka Speedy Singhs is an ice-hockey based flick and although many might have not seen the movie, this song by RDB and Ludacris is very popular.
Rum Whiskey – Vicky Donor
John Abraham took a very unconventional topic for his debut as a producer and we are glad he did, because Vicky Donor was one of the best films to come out this year. Though it starred Ayushman Khurrana, John couldn’t stop himself from jiving to this fun Punjabi song.
Antenna – Always Kabhi Kabhi
Red Chillies’s Always Kabhi Kabhi was sadly a very wannabe affair and although an SRK appearance is always loved, this song was very thanda which even King Khan couldn’t make appealing.
Tai Tai Phis – Chillar Party
Salman Khan decided to go hatke for his home production, Chillar Party. Although he did star in the promos for this movie, when it came to the item song, he decided to take Ranbir Kapoor. Not that the girls are complaining but it would have been fun to have had both the eligible bachelors together in the song!
With the arrival of this summery season it’s always the florals which make a welcome comeback to the fashion scene. However, stars seem to have found a new love -Polka Dots! A lot of Bollywood celebrities were seen donning this at various events and I must say that they look adorable!! Polka’s in for sure!
Katrina look-alike Zarine Khan was spotted at an event wearing an orange georegtte designer saree. The saree was embellished with polka dots and had a background of black with gold work border. She paired this with a short sleeves silk blouse.

At a recent event fashionista Sonam Kapoor was seen wearing one of the dresses from Stella McCartney’s Fall Collection 2o11. Sonam does look gorgeous in this white appliqued sheath dress.

Every year, at the bright new start, we have a number of awards celebrating the ‘best’ of Bollywood. Amidst accusations of being biased and crass and downright silly, these award shows continue to tell us what has been the viewers’ favorite (never mind that the people watching this on television might not agree). So with enough of the best, it was time to take a look at the worst too. Coz, it’s many of these baddies which make the others look good in comparison and definitely deserve their due credit. The Ghanta awards have taken upon themselves to do this noble task.
Started last year, this desi version of the Razzies celebrated the best of the worse for the year 2011 and was held at, aptly, the Comedy Store. It was a night of fun (at the expense of the stars!), great doses of sarcasm and wit and loads of hooting and cheering. The wittiest of the hosts – Varun Grover, G. Khamba, Varun Thakkar, Aditi MittalandKaran Talwar– emceed the show. Of course there were spoofs galore : whether it was the red carpet ‘coverage’, the too-painted, fake-smiled presenters or the celebrities themselves. We loved the way the nominations were shown as cartoon strips! For the worst film awards, each nomination was shown as a live promo on the ‘thought process’ (read dope intakes) behind the scripting of these disasters. Ra.One, Salman’s Ready /Bodyguard and anything Kangna Ranaut made it to the Ghantas.
“Kangna is so stupid that she went to Dr. Mallya for her boob implants….”
“In our exams we always had the ‘Name 5 differences between…’ question. I am sure next time they are going to ask ‘Name 5 differences between Ready and Bodyguard’!”
“Kangna is so stupid that….”
“David Dhavan wakes up once in a year to realize that the world needs more crap from him”
“Kangna is so stupid that….”
We have no doubts what the stars’ reactions might have been once they heard about their nominations. Mind you, it wasn’t for the faint-hearted! The hosts were quite unabashed when it came to pulling legs. Sample this :
Aditi : “Ranbir and Nargis are nominated for worst couple for Rockstar”
Varun : “Yeah, he dates every co-star he works with. (turning to the gal in 1st row) Hi Sonam!”
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
That’s right. Of all the celebrities nominated, it was only Sonam Kapoor who sportingly attended the award. She even received her WTF award for Mausam (we have new found respect for her!) saying, “This is the first award I have won for my film!” We saw her happily posing for her fans and she did look like she enjoyed the show very much (she had tweeted, “Was at the Ghanta Awards. What a talented bunch of writers and actors! Great show guys”).
Overall the show, unlike the movies it awarded, was a total paisa wasool. Here’s our top 5 from the Ghantas :
Varun Thakkar’s SRK imitations …..oh those DONliners! (We loved the other hosts too!)
The cartoon strips-n-promo style nominations
Sonam being a real sport and turning up for the award show ( We now have a count of how many have a sense of humor when it come to THEM )

Someone finally told the phillum industry : Kya GHANTA picture thi yaar!
Considered as the Oscars of Bollywood cinema, it is no secret that the Filmfare awards are the most revered of the lot – as one of the winners rightly said that in spite of his movie’s good run at other awards, his mom wanted him to win the Filmfare! The who’s who of the film fraternity made themselves available for this big night. Held on 29th January (the event started by 9 pm) at the Yash Raj Studios, Andheri, a hoard of celebrities were seen walking the red carpet at this prestigious award show.
Considered the forte of Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan, the Gen Y heartthrobs Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan (or ‘RK’ and ‘IK’ as they prefer to call themselves), compered this event and managed to keep the guests highly entertained. Whether it was their filmi entry with a video intro, or Ranbir’s jokes about the Deepika and Sonam’s Koffee With Karan show, or the list of things that have ‘changed’ in Bollywood (‘Pehle Karan Johar, SRK aur Kajol ke saath filmein banate the lekin ab…uhh ab bhi SRK aur Kajol ke saath filmain banate hain!‘ – First Karan Johar used to make films with SRK and Kajol but now…uhh even now he makes films with SRK and Kajol!), the duo managed to keep the audience engaged with their endearing chemistry. The first set of awards, the technical awards, were dominated solely by small budget movies like Udaan, Love Sex aur Dhoka and Do Dooni Char. In fact when Farah Khan came to receive the best choreography award for Sheila Ki Jawani, she thanked Udaan for not having a song in their movie and not being nominated and said that she was actually excited that her kids had won their first award at Sports Day! Poonam Dhillon, Shriya Saran, Payal Rohatgi, Kabir Bedi, Atul Kulkarni, Alka Yagnik gave away the awards for the 1st segment.
Sonu Niigam enthralled everyone with his rendition of the popular Titanic song ‘My Heart Will Go On’. Sonu said that there are many people in this industry who he admires and one of those people is Yash Chopra, he then went over to him and asked him about his continued excellence in this field. Dedicating the song ‘Eh Meri Johra Jabeen’ (from Waqt) to him, he then moved on to sing ‘Main Hoon Na’ and asked his close dear friends Farah Khan and Anu Malik to join in and sing. SRK nostalgically looked on, and then later joined in to lip sync to their very famous song ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’. At his wittiest best, when SRK was asked by Sonu how it felt to be in this industry for so long he replied, “There are two answers. One composed by my wife which is that I am highly obliged to be amongst you all. The other is mine which is that I was born to be a star!” Shotgun Shatrugan Sinha stated that it was his will to maintain his distinct style which made him so popular – “Prove yourself better than the best or prove yourself different than the rest!” But the best part was when Sonu managed to get the ever gorgeous Rekha to sing to Dil Cheez Kya Hai – which she did amazingly well! – and she made him dance to this very song!
The 2nd set of awards was hosted by the witty Vir Das and the lovely Prachi Desai (who looked cute in a pink gown). Funny thing though was that while SRK was hurrying away to escort his wife Gauri back to the auditorium, the LCD screen happened to play the Aman Ki Asha advertisement (which shows the Pakistani folks conveying through Dumb Charades to play the song from DDLJ). As soon as he heard his name on the screen, he stopped in his tracks to see what the ad was about and couldn’t stop himself from smiling! Gulzar too couldn’t stop himself from wittily commenting on his Best Lyricist Award trophy. The Black Lady who has gone through various ‘weight reductions’ in the past year was restored to her original weight which led Gulzar to comment: Badi Muddat ke baad mili ho tum, yeh jo thodi si bhar gayi ho tum, yeh vazan tumpe achcha lagta hai! (Have met you after a long time. The little weight that you seem to have put on suits you perfectly well!). Great singer Manna Dey who was awarded the Lifetime achievement award could not make it to the event due to ill health but Vidya Balan went to his residence to hand over the trophy to him.
Golmaal 3 managed to win the only category it was nominated in – the best scene of the year – and Kajol happily went up to the stage to receive the award for her husband’s movie – while compere Karan Johar tried to make her give the award to Arshad Warsi who was present. “Behave yourself Kajol,” he admonished her jokingly.
RK and IK were back again as the netas of the ‘dance’ party solemnly swearing to do those things which actual politicians don’t – ‘like spreading false rumors for publicity, changing camps’! While RK made sure that he didn’t stop pulling the leg of the newly married Imran (“Tu saala shaadi ke alava kuch sochta hi nahi” – You don’t seem to think of anything other than marriage), they made sure that everyone repeated their mantra “Kya Aap hamare saath hain…Haan Hum Tumhare saath hai.” (Are you with us?…Yes we are with you!) Kareena’s Best supporting actress award was picked up by KJo since the actress was not there because she is shooting in Pune, while Ronit Roy was ecstatic at winning the Best Supporting Actor.
Priyanka Chopra who performed on ‘Dola Re’ (Devdas), dedicated the performance to the dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit (who by the way looked truely radiant). Madhuri, who completed her 25 years in the industry, was awarded a trophy by none other than her onscreen Dola Re partner and Bachchan Bahu Aishwarya Rai. Thanking everyone responsible for her success, she said that her kids were proud of her and excused her long speech by saying that 10 minutes is comparatively a short time compared to her 25 years – “Wow! I am 25 years old!” Imran seemed at a loss for words at seeing his childhood crush “whom I wanted to marry” Madhuri. On the other hand Ranbir couldn’t help himself from poking fun at Priyanka over her latest IT Raid fiasco. Introducing her performance as the ” ‘IT’, I mean the ‘It’ girl! “, he said that hers was a million dollar performance. “And by million dollar we mean that her performance was million dollar, not that we paid her million dollar for the performance!” he quipped.
The lovely Sonakshi Sinha, who received her best debut award from Preity Zinta, was asked by both RK and IK to take an oath on the Filmfare magazine. Seeing their endless list, she boomed ‘Khamosh’ and thanked her parents for the award saying that their genes had worked out in her favor. Male Debutant Ranveer Singh was asked to take an oath on the mag with his photo on the cover to which he joked, “Tum log mujhe meri hi kasam khane ko keh rahe ho!” (You both are making me swear on myself!). Ranbir who asked debut director winner Maneesh Sharma (Band Baaja Baarat) to sign him for his next movies was met with the reply, “Pichla saal yaad karo!!” (Remember last year??!!)
IK and RK’s spoof of Guzaarish was probably one of their best segments. IK, as the magician Ethan (totally resembling Hrithik!), and RK , hilarious as Ash’s Sofia, performed enough ‘tricks’ to keep the audience rolling with laughter (we couldn’t help but notice that RK kept on giggling every few minutes – no prizes for guessing why that was so!). Next up was Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh who rocked the stage with performances of their songs from Band Baaja Baarat – ‘Aadha Ishq’, ‘Tarkeebein’, ‘Dum Dum’ and ‘Ainvayi Ainvayi’. Anushka who later emceed the Critics award segment seemed a little self-conscious but then it was her first time hosting the Filmfare awards.
Rani Mukherjee in a sexy violet gown was happy to give away the Critics Best Actress award to her No One Killed Jessica co-star Vidya Balan as well as the Critics Best Actor award to her childhood crush Rishi Kapoor. Talking about how he was hesitant to do Do Dooni Chaar, he stated that what finally convinced him was when the newbie director told him, “My story is the hero.” SRK gave a dedication to his source of inspiration – the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. Talking about how he tried to score good marks in order to make his parents take him to watch Deewaar he said, “Mr. Amitabh doesn’t know this, but joh thoda bahut main padha hoon who unhiki badolat hai!” (“Mr. Amitabh doesn’t know this, but the little bit that I got educated is because of him!”). Always ready to crack witty liners, SRK said that Jayaji would probably be angry with for saying all this but he asked Bachchan to “unhe sambhal lena” (handle her). Big B was awarded a trophy for his exceptional 40 years in the industry by none other than Yash Chopra himself.
The final round of awards was the most awaited, it came as no surprise that IK and RK came to stage dressed up as Dabangg‘s Salman and My Name Is Khan‘s SRK (we don’t know SRK’s reaction since he was backstage readying up for his performance and Salman chose to skip this event). Commenting on the famous scene from Dabangg‘s climax, IK said that his shirt was all wrong as his buttons were not undone and his shirt had still not torn on its own accord: “Ek baar meri shirt ne commitment kiya toh who meri bhi nahi sunti!”(Once my shirt gives its commitment then it doesn’t even listen to me!) RK who kept on repeating MNIK’s popular dialogue “My Name is Khan and I am very, very smart” was met by a sharp reply from Imran, “Itna smart hai toh Ganguly ko drop kyun kiya! (from IPL)” (If you are so smart then why did you drop Ganguly!) . Karan Johar, who won the Best director award said that he had got his first Filmfare award for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai after which he was just able to emcee the show. He was happy that after 12 years he had managed to win a Filmfare award again and moved on from “and the nominees are” to “and the winner is.”
SRK and Madhuri gave the audience the best performance of the night and made everyone wish that they should come together onscreen again. Performing to ‘Main Agar Kahoon’, ‘Tujh Main Rab Dikhta Hai’, ‘Tere Naina’, ‘Maar Daala’ and ‘Arere Arey Yeh Kya Hua’, their chemistry was sizzling and the performance looked totally effortless and from the heart. Kudos to both of them! Timeless beauty Rekha gave away the Best actress award to Kajol and the Best actor award to SRK (not until IK, RK AND SRK had performed MINK’s trademark dance step!).
While the nominations and the winners have yet again received tremendous criticism, it was without doubt a star-filled night (quite literally) to be cherished for a long time!

Each movie brings something new that thrills audiences and makes them applaud. One of those thrills is the songs that are created to help make the moments and enhance the story of the film. While some songs fail to leave a mark on the audience, some remain etched forever in the minds and hearts of Bollywood fans. So much so that they become responsible for imitations galore…in short they become trendsetters for the others to follow. Here’s a quick look at what we think are the ten trendsetting songs of the decade. Since ten years means numerous movies and abundant songs, we had a hard time narrowing down to just 10 but here are our picks, for some that left the others to follow!
.
Woh Ladki Hai Kahan: Dil Chahta Hai
The countdown would be incomplete nay invalid without this song. Amazing choreography by Farah Khan, this one introduced the theme of retro-spoof in Bollywood. Quite a few songs followed this concept of imitating the old Bolly-era : whether it was ‘Gustak Dil’( again Farah’s from Dil Maange More), ‘Kyun Aage Piche’(Golmaal) or the more recent ‘Chalte Chalte’ (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi). We still think the original rocks though!
.
‘Heyy Babyy’: Heyy Babyy
Special appearances by a star was something which has been seen in quite a few movies with the director asking his “camp-mates” to show up in a few seconds in their films. But an entire plethora of stars? Sajid Khan achieved that with the title track from his directorial debut with a bevy of Bollywood’s finest beauties dancing away to glory. Of course, next came his sister’s Om Shanti Om with many a star appearing in ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ and the rest as they say is history.
.
‘Kajraare’: Bunty aur Babli
Aishwarya shocked and surprised all with her “item number” from this Yash Raj movie. No one can deny the fact that they found this desi item girl more sexy than the haute modern counterparts. Which meant that many actresses then gave a try to don this desi avatar in a desi number to win the desi crowd! Priyanka in Salaam-e-Ishq, Preity in Main aur Mrs. Khanna or the most recent Kat starrer ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ from Tees Mar Khan. We know that they pale in comparison to this kajraare naina for sure.
.
‘Singh is Kinng’: Singh is Kinng
This one is being obediently followed by Akshay Kumar himself. We are talking about collaborating with international artists to sing a promotional song for the movie. While Singh is Kingg had Snoop Dogg, Akki’s next Chandni Chowk to China had Bohemia and his next again Blue had Miss Chiggy Wiggy Kylie Minogue. Akshay did try for Kambakth Ishq too without success. After international actors, we definitely should credit Akki for getting international artists to Bollywood.
.
‘Dus Bahane’: Dus
Speaking of promotional songs, who can forget the dishy Abhishek Bachchan in the opening credits of this movie. Quite a unique way to glue the audience to the start as well as to retain them till the end, credit songs became popular with almost all movie like Bunty Aur Babli, Golmaal franchise, Krazzy 4 etc using them.
.
‘Chale Jaise Hawayen’: Main Hoon Na
Farah Khan claimed to can this song in one – well technically two – shots which meant that more directors tried to finish their song sequences in a single shot. Remember ‘Naughty Naughty’ from Cash?
.
‘Yeh Fizayen’: Main Hoon Na
Another from Farah Khan’s directorial debut, this song included all the crew from the movie who introduced themselves. A unique way to role credits, this was also followed in her Om Shanti Om among others.
.
‘Jaadoo Hai Nasha Hai’: Jism
One of the first bold movies of Bollywood, this song will also be remembered for showing very daring and sexy love making scenes between Bipasha and John. Followed by Murder and other such movies, this one still manages to shock and surprise you.
.
‘Aashiq Banaya Apne’: Aashiq Banaya Apne
This song is responsible for introducing the nasal voiced Himesh Reshamiya in a singing avatar, the success of this song, made the other music directors think they could also utilize their singing talents as well. So, while music directors until recently hardly ever sang, this new trend meant that they started singing more often – sometimes the entire album. Anand Raaj Anand, Aadesh Shrivastav, Vishal, Shekhar, Sohail Sen… the list indeed is endless.
.
‘Roobaroo’: Rang De Basanti
While the composer of the great song ‘Aye Saala’ had no inhibitions using ‘saala’, others lyricists soon started using the local words – read swears – to help the songs connect better to the audience and the youth. Who can forget ‘Aye Ganpat’ from Shootout at Lokhandwala.

Bollywood is not new to remaking movies but the good thing is that instead of getting ‘inspired’, it is now following the legitimate route of remaking only after acquiring the rights from the original makers. Quite a few such projects are in the pipeline but we give you the top 5 eagerly awaited remakes……………….
1. READY
After starring in successful remakes like Tere Naam and Wanted, Salman Khan will be seen in yet another one- Hindi version of 2008 superhit Telugu movie Ready which starred Ram and Genelia. To be produced by Bhushan Kumar and directed by Aneez Bazmee, this movie will see the pairing of Salman-Asin once again after London Dreams. Pritam will be composing the music.
Ready is the story of Chandu, a final year engineering student who mistakenly kidnaps the wrong bride-and falls in love with her- while trying to help his friend. His task now is to make her family members ‘ready’ to accept their relation. Salman loved the script but refused to play a college student stating that it wouldn’t suit him. Last heard, some drastic changes had been made to the script to keep him happy.
2. KAAKHA KAAKHA
Gautham Menon’s 2003 Suriya-Joytika Tamil blockbuster Kaakha Kaakha is being remade by Vipul Shah with John Abraham playing the lead. To be directed by Nishikant Kamat(of Mumbai MeriJaan fame), the story’s about a brave and honest cop who is determined to wipe out a gang of hardcore criminals.
It was announced that Asin would be the female lead opposite John but was dropped after it was observed that her character would be similar to the one she played in Ghajini. News has it that Deepika Padukone has now been approached to play the lead.
3. IT’S MY LIFE
It’s my life is a remake of 2006 superhit romantic movie Bommarillu starring Siddharth and Genelia. Directed by Aneez Bazmee, It’s my life is the story of Shashank(Harman Baweja) whose life is controlled by his extra-loving father (Nana Patekar.)That is, until he meets Natalie(Genelia D’souza), a bubbly, carefree girl who likes living life on her terms.
The film is set to release on 26th November, 2010.
4. BODYGUARD(Yet Untitled)
Salman Khan’s brother-in-law, Atul Agnihotri, recently announced the remake of 2010 Malayalam movie Bodyguard with of course Salman in the lead. Siddique, who directed the original, be will directing the Hindi version as well. The title of the movie as well as the female lead is yet to be decided. Bodyguard’s the story of a ‘heroism-loving’ man who attempts to move in with any person whom he admires, as his bodyguard.
The original starred Dileep and Nayantara.
5. VINNAI THANDI VARUVAAYA(YetUntitled)
The recently announced Vinnai Thandi Varuvaayu(VTV)-remake has very few confirmed details, but it makes the list because of the immense interest it has already generated. Gautham Menon who directed the original, will be directing the Hindi version as well. The tunes composed for the Tamil version by A.R.Rahman will be used with probably an addition of a song.
VTV is the story of an aspiring director who falls in love with a Malayalee Christian girl Jesse. Trisha has confirmed that she will be starring in the Hindi version. As for the male lead, the director’s yet to finalize a name though the names doing the rounds are Siddharth(who confirmed he is not doing it), Prateik Babbar and Ranbir Kapoor.
Picking out a favorite movie scene is like selecting your favorite song: there are so many and you don’t know which one to choose because the choices always vary with time. So zeroing down on just one scene was a difficult task, but this particular scene from Taare Zameen Par(TZP) will always remain one of my favorites.
Aamir in the scene from TZP
THE SCENE:
Ishaan Awasthi’s father (Vipin Sharma) visits Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aaamir Khan) at the boarding school with the intention of stating that they are caring parents and proving Nikumbh’s presumptions wrong. Nikumbh quietly tells him what taking care actually means thus silencing Mr. Awasthi and making him realize his mistake.
WHY IT’S SO SPECIAL:
TZP is filled with emotionally poignant scenes but this one stays with you because it does not make use of excessive drama or heavy-duty emotional dialogues. When Ishaan’s father states that they do care for him as they have done ‘online research on dyslexia’, Aamir’s character tells him in a very subtle manner what caring for someone actually is. Nikumbh’s short monologue makes one realize that parents’ responsibilities don’t end with providing the best educational options or materialistic comforts or a luxurious lifestyle. Taking care of your child means to comfort him, be with him when he needs you the most, motivate him when he’s dejected; just a hug or a kiss is enough to show that you really care.
To a silent Mr. Avasthi Nikumbh quietly says, “Khayal karna isi ko kehte hain na? Mujhe ye sunkar khushi hui ki aapko lagta hai ki aap khayal karten hai.” (“Isn’t this what is called caring? I am glad to hear that you think you do care.”)
Another important point raised is the affect words can have on people. Nikumbh tells him of the Solomon Islands where the people don’t cut off an unwanted tree but gather around cursing and abusing it, indirectly telling us that the arrows of poisonous words can destroy even the brave-hearted. Words can make or break a person. A slap will never have the same affect that a harsh word has.
As the chastised father prepares to leave, he sees his dyslexic son struggling and succeeding in reading a hoarding…

Not without reasons do they say that first impressions are the most important. This is why introduction of characters- whether books or movies or soaps- is done with a lot of care. With respect to movies, the safest way to introduce a character is through a song which is why it is often used in Bollywood. Here’s my countdown of top 10 introduction songs which will always remain on my favorite list.
Manmohini – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
‘Mitti pe khichi lakeeren rab ne, to ye tasveer bani; Aag, hava, paani ko milaya, to phir ye tasveer sajhi.’ What better way to introduce the ‘teekhi’ Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan)! The song aptly shows the spirited and naughty nature of her character, with the highlight being the lovely choreography and Ismail Darbar’s music. Also I loved the way they used the game of ‘lagori’ to describe the character: her grace, determination.
Silsila Yeh Chaahat Ka – Devdas
This is one of the most amazingly choreographed songs in the history of Bollywood. Feelings of first love, the pain of separation and the joy of meeting; all these emotions of Paro are effectively captured in this song. And Aishwarya has perfectly portrayed the innocence and beauty of Paro. I like the fact that the lighted diya is used as a symbol for Devdas-Paro love-which has to stand many tests. As Roger de Bussy-Rabutin has said, “Absence is to love as wind is to fire; it extinguishes the small and kindles the great.”
Paisa Yeh Paisa – Karz
Rishi Kapoor as Monty Oberoi is introduced in this peppy number from Karz. Though the dance steps are not intricate, Rishi’s charisma is enough to light up the screen; you just can’t help but start tapping your feet as well! The core point of the song is the hassles of money which is apt as it was this ‘paisa’ which was responsible for the betrayal and untimely death in his previous birth.
Aye Bachchu – Ghajini
A few might be questioning this selection but I really like the feel of the song. It has a totally international-videoish look about it which is rare in Bollywood movies. Asin’s Kalpana is free-spirited who loves to live every moment of her life and this is conveyed nicely through the song. Additionally, her character is an aspiring actress which explains the different concepts used in the song. In fact I prefer this song to her Rahatula in the original.
Saajanji Ghar Aaye – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
If there’s one star who has immense screen presence, it’s Salman Khan. Making a grand entry as Aman Mehra, Anjali’s fiancé , Aman sets many hearts racing with his dashing personality and wicked smiles (Our Bollyspice Editor Prathna admitted that she literally fell off the theatre seat when Salman made his entry !) The song makes you realize that Aman’s entry will have many repercussions in the lives of all those around him.
Bum Bum Bole : Tare Zameen Par
This one’s a truly cute and endearing song which sees the entry of Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan). Good music, sweet lyrics; this song puts forth Nikumbh’s beliefs – It’s in the eye of the beholder. ‘Hum jaise dekhe ye jahan hai vaisa hi’ (The world appears to us as we wish to see it.).
Cham Cham : Striker
Seriously, this is one of the most beautiful and highly under-rated songs in recent times. Noorie’s (Nicolette Bird) entry into Surya’s life and the way she affects him is shown in a simple yet heartwarming manner. Sonu Nigam’s vocal’s , Jitendra Joshi’s lyrics and Shailendra Barve’s music are the plus points of this lovely song.
Ek Do Teen : Tezaab
This song needs no introduction and I obviously don’t have to mention why I love this song ! Mohini (Madhuri Dixit Nene) makes a heart-stopping entry to the chants of ‘Mohini!Mohini!’ and you realize the real reason why she is the Dhak Dhak girl. Groovy steps and Madhuri’s adaayen make this a must watch.
Yai Re Yai Re : Rangeela
This still remains one of the most popular dance songs and a large part of the credit goes to apunki Milli (Urmila Matondkar) who makes dancing look so much easy and enjoyable. A.R.Rahman’s music is of course the icing on the cake. (And yes, I also remember the outfits of Urmila in the song!)
Chale Jaise Hawayein : Main Hoon Na
Sanjana (Amrita Rao) and Laxman Prasad Sharma (Zayed Khan) make an onscreen entry with this song. A catchy number , this song aptly captures Sanju’s rebellious and Lucky’s flirtatious nature.
Decent music by Anu Malik and good choreography by Farah Khan, this is one song which you can watch n number of times.
